In a recent interview with People, Dan Levy, the 40-year-old actor widely known for his role in “Schitt’s Creek,” opens up about a missed opportunity that still haunts him – turning down a role in the blockbuster hit “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig.
Levy reveals that he had the chance to play one of the Ken roles in the star-studded film, featuring Margot Robbie, Ryan Reynolds, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and Hari Nef. Despite his eagerness, scheduling conflicts proved insurmountable, forcing him to reluctantly decline what he refers to as the “role of a lifetime.”
“Logistically, could not make it work despite desperately trying to,” he shared with the magazine. “So, yeah, I guess I was technically unavailable to do that.”
“Barbie” went on to dominate the box office in 2023, earning an impressive $155 million on its opening weekend and ultimately surpassing $1 billion in total box office revenue. The film also secured two Golden Globes, fueling growing Oscar buzz.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Levy expressed his disappointment, acknowledging that it still haunts him, though only “sometimes.” He admitted, “Does it haunt me when I sleep at night? Sometimes. It’s not like it isn’t one of the biggest movies of all time. That was a tough day.”
The regret was compounded by Levy’s admiration for Greta Gerwig’s unique directorial style. “I think Greta has such a wonderfully bizarre and magical aesthetic idea of what that movie was,” he said. “I would have loved to play in her world. I think she is one of the great, young auteurs of our time.”
Despite the setback, Dan Levy remains a celebrated figure in the entertainment industry, and fans can only wonder what magic could have unfolded had he been part of the enchanting world of “Barbie.”
