Yes, Happy Death Day 3 is still moving forward creatively, with Jessica Rothe confirming that Christopher Landon already has the third movie’s story figured out and pitched — but the sequel still does not have an official release date or production start.
That is a much better update than Happy Death Day fans have had in years.
Speaking at the Deadline Studio during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Rothe revealed that she and franchise creator Christopher Landon recently sat down at an undisclosed bakery between their homes and completely broke the plot map for the third film.
However, despite having a fully developed story treatment ready to go, the highly anticipated horror-comedy sequel has not yet received an official green light from the studios.
The production is currently waiting on Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions to officially fund the project before cameras can officially roll.
Director Christopher Landon has long maintained that he envisioned the series as a trilogy, previously teasing that the official working title for the final installment is Happy Death Day To Us. The main delay for the film has been logistical, as the franchise’s second entry, Happy Death Day 2U, underperformed slightly at the box office compared to the smash-hit original.
Thankfully, the series has developed a massive, dedicated cult following on streaming networks over the last few years. Rothe has made it clear that she is fully committed to finishing the trilogy, stating that whether the studio backs it next year or when she is 65 years old, she will be back to conclude the journey.

The franchise has been stuck in sequel limbo since Happy Death Day 2U arrived in 2019. Now, however, both Rothe and Landon continue to push for the third chapter, and the actress is clearly not ready to say goodbye to Tree Gelbman.

When asked about the long-awaited sequel, Rothe gave fans something much more substantial than another vague “we’ll see.”
She said Christopher Landon has the whole third movie figured out and described his plans as something fans should be excited about. The interview was published in March 2026, and the conversation quickly reignited interest in the dormant franchise.
That does not mean a finished screenplay is sitting on a studio desk waiting for a release date.
It means the creative blueprint exists.
And that distinction matters.
Landon has previously explained that he has a story for the third movie but has not moved into a full screenplay without a studio commitment. A 2025 report also noted that the filmmaker and Rothe were continuing to push the project forward while waiting for the business side to catch up.
Happy Death Day 3 Is More Than Just a Fan Wish
This is not simply a case of fans demanding another sequel on social media.
In April 2025, Rothe and Landon publicly confirmed that the third movie was “moving forward.” Landon backed her up, making it clear that the project remained alive.
Then came the 2026 SXSW update, which added another important piece.
Rothe says Landon already has the story figured out.
That means the biggest mystery is no longer whether the filmmakers have an idea for Tree’s next adventure. They do.
The real question is whether the studio will decide that the time is finally right to make it.

This is where Happy Death Day 3 becomes really interesting.
The second movie did something unusual for a horror sequel. Instead of simply giving Tree another killer and another repeating day, it expanded the mythology behind the time loop.
The SISSY reactor became the key.
And then the movie’s mid-credits scene opened the door to an entirely different story.
What Happened to Danielle?
At the end of Happy Death Day 2U, Tree and her friends have returned to their original reality.
But their problems are far from over.
DARPA takes control of the SISSY reactor because the organization wants to investigate its extraordinary properties.
Then comes the punchline.
DARPA needs a test subject.
Tree suggests Danielle.
The scene ends with Danielle apparently being placed into a new experiment, setting up the possibility that another character could experience the nightmare Tree spent two movies trying to escape.
That is one of the clearest unresolved threads the third movie could pick up.
Could Danielle Become the New Tree?
Possibly.
But that does not necessarily mean Tree disappears from the story.
In fact, Jessica Rothe’s continued involvement makes it far more likely that Tree remains the emotional center of the trilogy.
The Danielle cliffhanger could instead become the doorway into a much larger story involving multiple characters and the consequences of the SISSY technology.
That would also fit Landon’s comments about changing the formula.
The Third Movie Could Be Completely Different
This may be the most important clue about Happy Death Day 3.
Landon has repeatedly indicated that he does not want to simply make Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U again.
He has described the third installment as something much bigger, with an “epic apocalyptic adventure” element and a major shift in tone and scale.
That could take the franchise far beyond its original college setting.
Instead of Tree trying to survive one repeating birthday, the third movie could explore the consequences of the technology itself.
What happens if the time-loop phenomenon spreads?
What happens if more than one person becomes trapped?
And what happens if the people controlling the technology realize they can actually manipulate reality?
Those are theories, not confirmed plot details.
But they are much more consistent with the direction Landon has teased than simply giving Tree another Babyface killer.
Could There Be Another Babyface?
Almost certainly, fans will expect one.
The Babyface killer became one of the franchise’s defining images. It is difficult to imagine a Happy Death Day movie completely abandoning that identity.
But there is currently no confirmed information saying that the third movie will introduce another Babyface killer.
The bigger mystery may actually be whether the killer remains the main threat at all.
If Landon really does take the franchise into the larger, stranger territory he has described, the horror could come from something much bigger than one masked murderer.
Could Happy Death Day 3 Connect to Freaky?
Here’s where Rothe’s latest interview gets particularly fun.
During the SXSW conversation, she suggested that Landon has his own version of a connected cinematic universe in mind. She specifically mentioned the possibility of his movies — including Freaky, Happy Death Day, We Have a Ghost and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse — existing within the same broader universe.
That does not mean a crossover has been confirmed.
But it is a fascinating idea.
Landon directed both Happy Death Day and Freaky, two horror-comedies built around characters dealing with bizarre supernatural or reality-bending situations.
A connection between those movies would certainly fit the filmmaker’s sense of humor.
For now, though, treat the “Chris Cinematic Universe” idea as a fun possibility rather than an announced franchise plan.
So, Will There Be a Happy Death Day 3?
The answer is increasingly hopeful, but it is not a guaranteed yes yet.
The biggest development is that the filmmakers are no longer talking about a third movie as nothing more than an abandoned idea.
Christopher Landon has the story figured out. Jessica Rothe wants to return. Both have publicly pushed the project forward. And the 2026 SXSW interview gave fans another major confirmation that the third movie’s story has already been pitched.
But there is still one major hurdle.
The studio has to say yes.
Until that happens, there is no official release date and no confirmed production schedule.
That may sound frustrating after seven years of waiting.
But for Happy Death Day fans, there is a huge difference between “there is no movie” and “the movie has a story, its creators are still fighting for it, and the lead actress is still ready to return.”
Right now, Happy Death Day 3 is firmly in the second category.
And considering Landon’s promise of a very different and potentially much bigger final chapter, Tree’s next death day could be worth the wait.
